The College of Medicine, Department of Neurology & Rehabilitation Medicine is seeking a full-time (100% FTE) Research Associate. The incumbent will help conduct research work in areas pertinent to fields in neurochemistry and molecular neurobiology . Having an independent research program is not required.

Essential Functions

  • Studying the effect of microbial pathogens on depleting human cerebrospinal fluid of essential proteins, leading to neurodegeneration via loss of function.
  • Performing research activities in the lab related to the study of viral and bacterial neuro pathogenesis including but not limited to performance of cell culture, molecular and microbiological experiments such as working with intestinal organoids, epithelial and immune cell cultures, isolation of DNA and RNA, gel electrophoresis (agarose, SDS-PAGE), enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA), processing of mouse stool samples and cecal contents for nucleic acid extraction, pathogen burden, biochemical analysis, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), quantitative PCR, c-DNA synthesis, protein purification & dialysis, cell preparation for flow cytometry, maintenance of anaerobic chamber use, bacterial spore culture, CFU count and purification to perform infection in mice, in-vitro germination assay and growth assay, and mouse infection experiments; collecting, recording, and consolidating data.
  • Assisting in documenting compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines.
  • Preparation of reagents, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and inventory of reagents and samples.
  • Managing procurement of supplies and materials, initiating purchasing requests, and monitoring accounts/expenditures.
  • Maintaining mouse colonies and mammalian and bacterial cultures.
  • Making independent contributions to projects and studies based on professional training or functional experience.
  • Solving problems using combined research knowledge.
  • Independently working on whole projects/problems.
  • Performing statistical and graphical analysis of data, interpreting data and assisting in judging validity of data.
  • Analyzing research results.
  • Organizing data search and analysis procedures.
  • Assisting in establishing test controls, criteria and research standards; assisting in the design of complex data processing systems to analyze research data.
  • Accomplishing assigned results for project/studies, or for significant aspects of larger, complex assignments.

Required Education

Bachelor's Degree required in Neuroscience, Neurobiology, or a closely related field.

Required Experience

5 years of laboratory research experience in neurochemistry or molecular neurobiology, which must have included all of the following: drug development, formulation, peptide chemistry, physical chemistry, neuronal signaling, electron microscopy, virological techniques, and cell culture.
